Our Story

Established in 2021 by Master John Servinis, Alliance Taekwondo began as a dream to share with people how amazing Taekwondo can be and how incredible of an impact it can have on your life.

We believe that Taekwondo is not an individual sport. There is no such thing as a self-made person. In order to succeed you need a strong network of support behind you - an Alliance if you will. Our goal is to be the home of our students' and staffs' support network; to be the allies they need in order to succeed not only in taekwondo, but in life

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a martial art originating from Korea. The word Taekwondo translates to foot (Tae), hand (kwon) and the way (do). It was originally developed as a form of self-defense but has since evolved into a globally recognized sport. In 1988 it debuted as a demonstration sport in the Olympics and became an official medal sport in the 2000 Sydney Games. Whether you're interested in fitness, self defense, competition or character building for you/ your child; Taekwondo has something for everyone!
  • Is Taekwondo safe for me/my child?
As with any sport there is a chance of injury. However at Alliance Taekwondo, safety is a major priority and we take every precaution necessary to ensure the risk of injury is very low.
  • What kind of equipment do I need for Taekwondo?
All you need to start training is a belt, uniform and water bottle! Sparring equipment will become necessary once you have reached yellow belt. Our staff will make sure that you have everything you need to get started!
  • Is there an age requirement or age limit?
Students must be at least 4 years' old to start, but there is no age limit. It is absolutely never too late to get started in taekwondo! Our classes are specifically designed to suit the ability and maturity level of any student who is interested in training.
  • What do the colored belts mean?
The belt colours determine a student's experience level. Students all start at the white belt level. As the students continue to train they will increase their knowledge and abilities, allowing them to test for the next belt. The belt system at Alliance Taekwondo is as follows: white → yellow stripe → yellow → green stripe → green → blue stripe → blue → red stripe → red → black stripe → black.
  • How long do I have to wait to test for the next belt? Why are some students advancing faster/slower than others?
Before you are eligible to test for your next belt there is a minimum amount of training time that is required. As you advance higher within the belt system, the amount of time required increases. However, even if the minimum amount of time has elapsed, you are not guaranteed to test. Master Instructors will determine whether or not you are ready to test; every student progresses at a different rate and we believe in only testing students who are properly prepared. If you are progressing a little bit slower than your timeline that is perfectly normal and we will do our best to provide you with the help you need to move forward.
  • When do we learn to spar? Do I have to spar?
Students begin sparring when they have earned their yellow belt. Sparring is a mandatory part of our taekwondo curriculum. Sparring is very important for developing taekwondo skills (reflexes, timing, distance, confidence and self control). We wait until yellow belt to begin sparring to ensure that our students have had a chance to get comfortable with the taekwondo system. To ensure safety, all students are taught how to spar with respect and control, and must wear all of the required safety equipment at all times when sparring.
  • Does Alliance Taekwondo offer any camps?
We do! We offer multiple camps over the course of the year. Feel free to contact us for more information!
  • What should I wear for my first trial class?
When coming in for a trial class we ask all students to wear comfortable exercise clothing (i.e. t-shirt and track pants). After your trial is completed one of our staff will talk to you about uniforms!
